Location
The Alfriston is a comfortable and traditional hotel, situated in a stunning location that our guests loved. The hotel is well-situated with easy parking and is a great base for exploring the surrounding area. Guests enjoyed the beautiful grounds, which included lovely gardens and a pleasant pool area. The ambience of the hotel was calming and lovely, making it a gorgeous spot to unwind. Guests also appreciated that the hotel was right on the riverbank with amazing views of the South Downs.
The location itself was a highlight of our guests' stay with many describing it as a fabulous and fantastic spot. Alfriston, the village in which Deans Place is located, was particularly praised for being so pretty and lovely with charming local walks and plenty of shops, cafes and pubs within walking distance.
Overall, our guests thought the location of The Alfriston was amazing and perfect for their needs, particularly with dogs. The breakfast was also excellent, making it a great way to start the day before exploring the beautiful surroundings.
Breakfast
The Alfriston consistently receives praise for its breakfast offerings with many guests stating that it was one of the best they've experienced during their travels. The breakfast is well-presented and cooked to perfection with options ranging from avocado and poached egg on toast to a variety of fruits, yoghurts and breads. While some guests note that the food wasn't always hot enough, most found the selection to be plentiful and tasty. Some guests also commented on the à la carte and buffet options available. Overall, the breakfast receives high marks with many guests also complimenting the attentiveness of the staff.
Dinner
The Alfriston is a great place to enjoy delicious food and professional service. While some guests found the dinner overpriced and basic, many others praised the excellent quality of food and wine. Some reviewers specifically commented on the lovely hotel location and friendly staff, as well as the exceptional starters and mains on the dinner menu. Vegetarians felt the food was good but could have more options and one guest found a carton top in their food. Overall, the restaurant food was well above standard with some minor exceptions. Whether you're looking for a tasty dinner or a good breakfast, this hotel won't disappoint.
Rooms
The Alfriston offers a range of rooms, from cosy to spacious with some overlooking the beautiful gardens. While some rooms are well-appointed and comfortable with lovely decor, others have outdated interiors and require refurbishment. A few guests noted issues with cleanliness and maintenance, including dirty carpets and walls, worn furnishings and bathrooms in need of updating. However, the hotel also received praise for its lovely amenities, comfortable beds and beautiful manor house feel. Overall, while there were some disappointments with certain rooms, others were brilliant and the hotel may suit those who appreciate quirky antique furniture and are not fussy about modern furnishings.
Beds
The Alfriston is a great choice for a comfortable night's sleep. The rooms are well-appointed and clean and many guests found the beds to be excellent and very comfortable. Some guests did mention a preference for a firmer mattress, but overall the beds were warm and cozy. While some thought the mattresses were too hard or too soft, most found them to be super comfy. Unfortunately, a few guests reported poor sleep due to small rooms, dirty sheets, or uncomfortable beds. However, these seem to be exceptions to an otherwise restful stay.
Cleanliness
After reading guest reviews of The Alfriston, it's clear that the cleanliness of the hotel varies greatly. On one end of the spectrum, some guests found everything to be exceptionally clean and well maintained. However, others reported issues such as mold on walls and ceilings, dirty bathrooms and carpets that looked worn and threadbare. Some guests even reported that certain areas of the hotel were probably never cleaned. Despite these negatives, some guests still found the rooms to be pleasant and well appointed with comfortable beds. The hotel's public areas were generally good, although some guests noticed leaks after heavy rain. Overall, while some guests had positive experiences with the cleanliness of the hotel, others were disappointed and noted that certain parts of the hotel were in need of refurbishment.
Staff
The Alfriston is clearly a top pick for those who value exceptional service from friendly and attentive staff. Reviewers consistently rave about the warmth and hospitality of the staff, noting that they go above and beyond to accommodate guests and help in any way possible. From the waitresses who are happy to assist with anything to the bar staff who will always go the extra mile, the team at this hotel is exceptional. Guests also praise the staff's knowledge and expertise, particularly when it comes to the food and wine. Whether you have special dietary requirements or just want a great recommendation, the staff is always willing to help. Overall, the service at Deans Place is consistently rated as outstanding with many guests stating that the staff truly made their stay unforgettable.
Pool
The Alfriston boasts a beautiful outdoor pool set in the tranquil surroundings of the local countryside. Guests rave about the warm and lovely pool with some even considering it an added bonus to their stay. The grounds are well-maintained with lovely gardens that complement the pool area. Guests can take advantage of the terrace and garden for a relaxing drink or meal with excellent service. Despite some complaints about loose flagstones around the pool, the majority of guests loved the pool and found it to be a highlight of their stay. The pool allows for a refreshing swim, even on sunny days as it gets sunlight throughout the day. Families with children should be aware that there may be out of control children in the pool at times. Nevertheless, the pool remains an excellent option for guests who want to unwind and soak up the beautiful scenery.
Parking
If you're planning a countryside getaway in the UK, The Alfriston might just be the perfect place for you. Many guests have praised the hotel's convenient and easy parking facilities, both out front and behind the hotel. What's more, visitors love the fact that they can leave their car parked even after checking out, allowing for more time to explore the beautiful surroundings. The hotel also offers a safe and free parking space for your convenience. However, some visitors have noted that rooms facing the car park may be a bit noisy due to the nearby parking area and outdoor light. Overall, if you're after a stress-free stay with plenty of parking, The Alfriston might just fit the bill.
4 Star
Nestled in a charming area, The Alfriston comes highly recommended as a privately owned establishment. However, some guests found it disappointing as the facilities did not match the 4-star rating they paid for. Many felt it was overpriced and in need of maintenance as the building was shabby and lacking attention. Despite this, others found the service exceptional and deserving of high praise. Ultimately, the hotel needs to invest more to live up to its rating and ensure guests' satisfaction.

This charming hotel puts a strong emphasis on being dog friendly, which many guests found to be a nice addition to their stay. Whether you're travelling with a small dog or a big one, the staff will treat your pet well and make a fuss of them.
