Former Castle Country House
The castle and its surrounding land date back to the 18th century. The property changed hands many times before been purchased by George Murray in the early 19th century, who renamed the castle as Mansfield. The turbulent history and change of owners did not cease then, though, since the castle was sold time and again, until the Fowler family came to its possession and refurbished it extensively at the beginning of the 20th century. During WWII, the castle was used by the military and after the war it was turned into a hotel, while still changing various owners throughout the years.

Haunted Country House
Mansfield Castle was initially built in the 18th century and has undergone a rather turbulent history since then, constantly being sold and changing owners. One of its longer lasting owners was the Fowler family, who purchased the castle in 1890 until a little before WWII. Mr Fowler died in 1930 and Mrs Fowler died in 1938, continuing to live in the castle until her final breath. It is said that her ghost still lingers in the castle's halls and chambers, showing her concern about the property and its state even after her death.

Some guests highlighted specific options such as the full Scottish breakfast and typical English breakfast as particularly enjoyable. Numerous reviews also commended the breakfast as well organized, perfectly cooked and with just the right portion sizes. The dining room service garnered positive remarks for its pleasant atmosphere and well-executed meals.

However, there were a few areas for improvement noted by some guests. A handful of reviews pointed out that certain elements felt basic or disappointing with specific criticisms about pre-packaged items and frozen bread detracting from the overall experience. Additionally, some found the breakfast offerings to be expensive relative to the portion sizes and quality.

The evening meals, including dishes like breaded haddock and chips, have been highlighted as superb and exceeding expectations. Diners have enjoyed the lovely food and drink, finding the meals to be good and not excessively priced.

However, there have been some consistency issues. Several guests faced challenges due to the restaurant being closed, redirecting them to the associated Morangie Hotel for dinner. This arrangement provided satisfactory food and service, though it wasn't ideal for everyone and some found the process of traveling for dinner inconvenient. In some instances, there was limited availability in the dinner menu with certain dishes selling out early in the evening. Despite these setbacks, the overall quality of the meal and the efforts of the staff to provide alternatives contributed positively to the dining experience.

Rooms
The Mansfield Castle Hotel offers a captivating and traditional Scottish experience with its charming castle atmosphere. Guests appreciate the spacious and comfortable rooms, which are described as clean and well-equipped with all necessary amenities. Many rooms provide ample space and comfortable seating, enhancing the overall stay.

Despite the positive aspects, some reviews highlight that the decor of the rooms feels a bit outdated and could benefit from renovations. There were mentions of rooms being cold upon arrival and some issues with dustiness. However, the beds are consistently commended for their comfort and the bathrooms, particularly those with large baths, receive praise for their size and cleanliness.

The hotel’s stunning exterior and the warmth of the entrance contribute to the overall positive impression. Some guests stayed in rooms outside the main building, which they found satisfactory but noted they lacked the charm of the main castle setting. The Tower Suite, in particular, is noted for making stays extra special with its spacious and quiet environment.

While the hotel’s atmosphere and traditional decor appeal to many, the general consensus suggests that updates and a bit of attention to maintenance would enhance the experience significantly. The rooms also came under scrutiny for dust and unkempt conditions with some needing significant cleaning attention and minor renovations.
