During my time in Germany, I felt transported to a world so different from the one I knew from my childhood in Greece. Growing up in a country where ancient ruins and sunlit temples dominate the landscape, the fairytale castles of Germany felt like pages from a picture book. Every visit to a castle was like traveling back in time, surrounded by forests, rivers and misty mountain peaks. With each trip, I discovered a new chapter in European history - full of kings, queens and medieval legends. These explorations are some of my fondest memories from my time abroad.

Germany is known for its picturesque landscapes and historic architecture - and nothing epitomizes these qualities better than its magnificent castles. From fairytale fortresses on mountaintops to elegant palaces on riverbanks, German castles offer a fascinating insight into the country's rich past. Here are some iconic castles that are well worth a visit:

Neuschwanstein Castle

Probably the most famous castle in Germany - Neuschwanstein in Bavaria - inspired the Disney castle of Sleeping Beauty. Built by King Ludwig II, it enchants visitors with its dreamlike towers and impressive backdrop of mountains and forests. Hohenzollern Castle

Eltz Castle

Heidelberg Castle

Wartburg Castle

Schwerin Castle

Hohenschwangau Castle
